Scrappy’s Romance

Love is in the air! I hope you all have plans to spend some time this weekend with someone you love…because it’s Valentine’s Day on Sunday! Haters gonna hate, but I think Valentine’s Day is a fun way to spread good vibes. Also, it doesn’t have to be a romantic holiday per-se. I’ve seen lots of cute ideas for Galentine’s Day parties, which sound like a great excuse to host brunch for some lucky friends…and I also think making (and receiving!) old fashioned valentines for friends & family is a fun tradition.

Personally, we have plans for a night in with a home cooked meal (Anthony Bourdain’s French Onion Soup, a big salad and creme brulee for dessert). Whatever your plans may be we recommend you start the night with a sprtizy cocktail like this one. It’s perfect for Valentine’s because (1) it’s pink and (2) contains champagne and strawberries. It’s also incredibly delicious!

Scrappy’s Romance (recipe adapted from Design Sponge)

  • 1/2 ounce strawberry syrup (see recipe below)
  • 1/4 ounce Aperol
  • 1/2 ounce gin (such as Tanqueray No. Ten)
  • 3 dashes Scrappy’s grapefruit bitters (any orange bitters works equally well here)
  • Champagne or sparkling wine

To make the strawberry syrup combine 1/2 cup sugar with 1/2 cup chopped strawberries in a small saucepan. Simmer for 15 min, stirring to help break down the berries. Strain into a clean jar and let cool (syrup will keep in the fridge for up to 1 month).

For the cocktail, add the strawberry syrup, Aperol, gin and bitters into an ice filled cocktail shaker. Double strain into a champagne flute. Top with champagne (or sparkling wine). Cheers!
